Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein made by the liver that binds to testosterone.
Although not required to initiate testosterone treatment, in certain situations, SHBG levels may be helpful as supportive information.
When SHBG levels are high, this might explain a lack of therapeutic response to testosterone replacement, despite normal total testosterone levels.
Conversely, when SHBG levels are low, this might explain androgenic adverse effects despite normal total testosterone levels.
Oral oestrogen can increase SHBG levels.
