Thank you for your feedback
- Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis.
- Assessment of bone mineral density by DEXA scan should be considered in all women with suspected POI, but especially where there are additional risk factors..
- A DEXA scan does not need to be arranged immediately but ideally in the first year after diagnosis.
- The frequency of repeat DEXA assessment should be guided by the woman’s risk for developing osteoporosis. If BMD is normal and adequate systemic oestrogen replacement is commenced, the value of repeated DEXA is low.
- In women with confirmed osteoporosis, repeat DEXA assessment should be considered every 3-5 years.
- Women should be advised on how to optimise their bone density.
NOTE:
- Fracture risk assessment tools, such as FRAX, are not validated for women under 40 years.
