Women should be informed that vaginal progesterone is unlicensed for use in HRT.
There is limited evidence on the efficacy and optimal regimens of vaginal progesterone in the context of HRT and most data looking at vaginal progesterone has been undertaken in fertility studies.
Vaginal progesterone, however, can be considered in women who experience progestogenic side effects with its oral intake.
When prescribed, intake should follow the same dosage recommended as with oral use.

Options include Lutigest 100mg vaginal pessaries, Cyclogest 200mg vaginal pessaries, and Utrogestan 200mg vaginal pessaries.
In addition, vaginal administration of oral micronised progesterone can be used.
