NICE says:
- Consider HRT for menopause symptoms in people with type 2 diabetes after taking co-morbidities into account and seeking specialist advice if needed.
- Advise that HRT is not associated with any adverse effect on glucose control.
The BMS says:
- HRT has been shown to decrease the incidence of type 2 diabetes as well as improve glycaemic control.
- HRT also improves lipid profiles, with transdermal delivery decreasing triglyceride levels, which may be of particular benefit to diabetic women.
NOTE:
Women with diabetes have an increased risk of endometrial cancer and therefore if given HRT they must receive an adequate dose of progestogen. Any abnormal bleeding should be promptly investigated.
