For a third of these women, symptoms will be severe enough to interfere with their lives.

- Changes in periods - typically they become irregular, may get lighter or heavier and eventually stop.
- Physical symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, muscle aches, a reduced libido and sleep problems.
- Genitourinary symptoms such as vaginal dryness.
- Psychological symptoms such as depressive symptoms, anxiety and memory or concentration difficulties (brain fog).
