Hunter et al, in 2009 compared the experiences of Asian women living in the UK with those living in India and with UK Caucasians.
They found different experiences of hot flushes and differing ranges of commoner symptoms between Asian women and UK Caucasians. UK Asians suffered more greatly from hot flushes than Delhi Asians.
% experiencing symptoms | Hot flushes | Night sweats | Vaginal dryness |
UK Caucasians | 60.8 | 50.0 | 21.6 |
UK Asians | 75.0 | 56.9 | 38.2 |
Delhi Asians | 32.0 | 24 | 7.3 |
Hunter’s conclusions:
The UK Asian women's experience of the menopause is more similar to the Caucasian women in the UK than that of the women in Delhi. However, Asian women living in the UK and the Indian subcontinent shared the experience of poor health and reports of more physical and emotional symptoms in general.
Symptoms:
Caucasian women were more likely to suffer from: tiredness, low energy, night sweats, sexual problems
Both Asian women in the UK and in Delhi were more likely to suffer from: visual disturbances, arthralgia, anxiety, palpitations, body aches, and urinary symptoms with fewer night sweats.
