- Although studies have shown that testosterone can be beneficial in women not using concomitant oestrogen, the incidence of adverse androgenic effects is higher and this strategy is therefore not recommended.
- In addition, testosterone can be aromatised to estradiol and their metabolites. It is therefore preferable to optimise estradiol levels first.
- Optimising estradiol refers to ensuring sufficient doses are used to improve menopause symptoms and should not require serum estradiol levels to be checked.
