Hysterectomy alone is not a surgical menopause, although a bilateral oophorectomy is often undertaken at the same time as hysterectomy.

Where there is a history of hysterectomy, most individuals can have oestrogen only HRT.
However, for women with a history of subtotal hysterectomy or hysterectomy after extensive endometriosis a progestogen may still be needed due to the presence of possible residual endometrium.
Combined preparations containing oestrogen with a progestogen should be used if the uterus is conserved.
