Otosclerosis is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern and leads to progressive hearing loss.
Evidence suggests that pregnancy and use of combined hormonal contraceptives can worsen this condition.
The natural course of the disease is progressive with time.
Whether taking HRT accelerates this is not known, however caution is advised.
