An acceleration of muscle loss with the menopause transition has been observed in studies.
OTHER CAUSES FOR MUSCLE LOSS:
- Age: the BMS says ageing and hormonal decline appear to have an adverse effect on muscle ageing.
- Activity related sarcopenia: bed rest, immobility or sedentary lifestyle.
- Disease related sarcopenia: advanced organ failure, inflammatory disease, malignancy or endocrine disease.
- Nutrition related: inadequate dietary intake of energy or protein.
The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People defines the criteria for sarcopenia as:
- Low muscle mass
- Low muscle strength
- Low physical performance
Other causes for sarcopenia should be considered and red flags excluded.
