HOW LONG CAN A COIL BE USED FOR AS PART OF HRT?
- Although the Mirena coil is only licensed for 4 years for HRT, the FSRH supports use of any 52mg IUD for up to 5 years off-label.
- Coils that contain 52mg LNG include the Mirena, Levosert and Benilexa.
- A 52mg LNG-IUD can be a good option for those women with perimenopausal heavy bleeding.
- There is no upper age limit for insertion.
- The coils Kyleena and Jaydess contain lower doses of LNG and should not be used for endometrial protection in HRT.
- The copper coil will not provide endometrial protection.
