HRT does not provide contraception unless a 52mg levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUD) is in place for endometrial protection or the combined contraceptive pill is being used instead of HRT.
In general, all women can stop contraception at 55 years when natural sterility can be assumed. Before this age, the need for contraception should be checked.
A woman who is not taking any hormone treatments is potentially fertile for 2 years after her last menstrual period if she is <50 years, and for 1 year if she is >50 years.
See management section for more information on contraception, including when to stop and suitable options.
