Article summary

  • An induced menopause describes the effect of treatments that have suppressed the menstrual cycle.
  • Treatments can be reversible or non-reversible.
  • Gonadotrophin releasing hormone agonists are examples of reversible medications. These lower oestrogen levels to within the menopausal range.
  • Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be examples of non-reversible treatments.

NICE says to offer support to people who are likely to experience menopause as a result of medical treatment and, before they have treatment:

  • Discuss fertility and menopause with them.
  • Offer them a referral to a health care professional with expertise in menopause care.
Note:

For information on the assessment and investigation of bleeding in the menopause transition see assessment section.
