- A surgical menopause <40 years will cause premature ovarian insufficiency (POI).
- A surgical menopause aged 40–44 years will cause an early menopause.
- Women with a POI caused by a surgical menopause should be advised to take HRT until the natural age of menopause (unless contraindicated) to reduce the risk of long-term health problems associated with low oestrogen levels, including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and cognitive impairment.
- Loss of fertility should be discussed with all women before surgery, but particularly in younger women.
